ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS impacts every system, process and transaction that contains or uses a code.
The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) is the diagnosis code set that replaced ICD-9-CM Volumes 1 and 2 on October 1, 2015. The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS) has replaced ICD-9-CM Volume 3 for reporting hospital procedures, also effective October 1, 2015.
This migration from ICD-9-CM to the current ICD-10-CM and PCS classification systems represents one of the greatest changes in healthcare information in many years.
ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS impacts every system, process and transaction that contains or uses a code. It is mandatory that healthcare providers, medical coders, billers and others use the current ICD-10-CM and PCS codes for reimbursement and quality of care initiatives. The new classification systems provide detail where none existed before. This expansion means improved data for use in assessing patient severity, the quality of care received, and patient outcomes.
